Church Structure

The ELCA is one church with three expressions: congregations, synods and the churchwide organization, each with unique roles, united in God’s mission.

Three Expressions, One Church

Congregations

ELCA congregations are the centers where faith is celebrated, learned and lived in worship and service. Across 8,400 congregations, we share bold grace and join in God’s work in the world.

Synods

The ELCA’s 65 synods unite congregations, provide regional support and guide leaders. In nine regions, they connect locally and with the churchwide organization to strengthen ministry.

Churchwide Organization

The ELCA’s churchwide organization in Chicago works with 65 synods and 8,400 congregations, guided by elected leaders to serve, resource and connect ministries across the U.S. and globally.
