ELCA & AI

Many faith communities, including the ELCA’s ecumenical partners and Lutheran companion churches, are discerning faithful responses to the new opportunities and concerns raised by AI. The ELCA churchwide organization, synods, and congregations have been involved in discernment both internally and with ecumenical partners. This church’s discernment is guided by ELCA social teachings. Theological Discernment staff members in the Office of the Presiding Bishop have produced a foundational document that draws on social teachings to ground the ELCA’s approach to AI. At the same time, we recognize that this church can learn from the work of other faith communities as we confront the complex landscape of AI. The ecumenical statements linked here are not authoritative for the ELCA but are shared solely as tools for learning and conversation.
