Program Description: In Baptism, young people are called by God into the community of Jesus, the church. From Baptism and beyond, it is the shared responsibility of their families and church communities to help them grow in faith and reflect on their identity as children of God in everyday life.
The Horizon Apprenticeship Program supports young leaders of color in discerning their vocational and spiritual gifts through hands-on ministry experience, mentorship, and community engagement. The program is designed to nurture a missional imagination in young people and create space to explore how God is calling them to lead in the church and in the world.
Beginning in summer 2025, the Horizon Program is expanding to a year-round model that offers apprenticeships lasting 3 to 9 months. This pilot year will support a cohort of 10 to 15 apprentices, ages 16 to 20, who are nominated by ELCA-affiliated congregations, camps, or community-based organizations committed to sustained accompaniment and meaningful ministry engagement.
Each apprentice receives a stipend of $1,800 per three-month term. The program offers leadership development, mentorship, and opportunities for vocational reflection within a context that respects and values the cultural and spiritual gifts of each participant.
