We embrace the rich diversity of people with Asian and Pacific Islander heritage—Cambodian, Filipino, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Lahu, Laotian, Tamil, Urdu, Mandarin, Burmese and more. Some have deep generational roots in the U.S.; others are first-generation immigrants. Together, we form a vibrant, growing part of the ELCA—over 100 Asian congregations and many who worship in multicultural settings.
Our vision is to strengthen ministry using culture, language and heritage as gifts—sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and serving our neighbors in a multicultural world. We aim to reach distinct communities uniquely while uniting in common faith. We recognize the realities of “first generation” experience: new arrivals, language challenges and cultural transitions—and we respond with pastoral care, spiritual formation, worship and community support rooted in our traditions.
Through the Association of Asians and Pacific Islanders—an autonomous ELCA-recognized group led by Asians/Asian descent Lutherans—we mentor leaders, lift voices and support full participation in church life. We encourage congregations and ministries to engage in multilingual worship, culturally relevant formation and community outreach. Download our Asian & Pacific Islander Strategic Plan, join the Association and explore resources to help nurture, connect and empower this growing community.

We welcome all who share a heart for Asian and Pacific Islander ministry. The Association of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the ELCA represents about 19,500 members serving in 85 Asian-language congregations—including Burmese, Cambodian, Cantonese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Lahu, Laotian, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Thai and Vietnamese—as well as in many English-speaking ELCA congregations across the United States.
Led by Rev. Dr. Moses Paul Peter Penumaka, Rev. Dr. Bimen Limbong, Rev. Chienyu Jade Yi and Ms. Pamaya Waworuntu, AAPI-ELCA exists for and by Asians in the ELCA. The association encourages the expression of Christian faith from Asian and Pacific Islander perspectives, supports the unique gifts of the AAPI community as witnesses to the Gospel and fosters full participation in every part of ELCA life.
AAPI-ELCA also helps implement the ELCA’s Asian and Pacific Islander Ministries Strategy and works to develop both rostered and lay leadership within our communities. Together, we strive to connect, grow and serve in faith, culture and leadership.
