Music

Psalm 100:1-2 CEB: “Shout triumphantly to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with celebration! Come before him with shouts of joy!”

Psalm 33:2-3 CEB: “Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre! Sing praises to him with the ten-stringed harp! Sing to him a new song!”

The spiritual gift of music readies you to use your voice or instruments as a means of worship, connection and proclamation. Through melody, rhythm and harmony, you express faith in ways that move beyond words alone, inviting others into a deeper awareness of God’s presence. This gift combines creative expression with spiritual sensitivity, allowing you to shape environments where people can encounter grace, healing and joy. Whether you sing, play, compose or lead, your music becomes a conduit for worship and a bridge that connects the people of your community with God and one another.

At its core, music is an expressive gift to the senses, crafting beautiful sound that unites communities in shared purpose and praise. Those with this gift are attuned to the emotional and spiritual tone of a gathering, using music to encourage, comfort and celebrate people, calling them into worship and deeper relationship with God. Music is not simply performance but also communal participation in collective experience. Musical expression creates space for others to join in, reflect on and respond to God’s presence. Those with this gift often carry a deep sense of responsibility to use their talents faithfully, offering their abilities not for personal recognition but for the common good, to deepen and enliven a community’s faith in God.

Some ways in which the gift of music might show up in your spiritual and communal life:

  • Leading congregational singing or playing an instrument during worship services.
  • Creating meaningful moments in small groups, prayer gatherings or retreats.
  • Composing or arranging music that reflects the life, struggles and hopes of your community.
  • Getting involved with the National Lutheran Choir or Lutheran Summer Music Academy.
