ELCA's People

Shared Leadership, One Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is a church of shared leadership. Across nearly 8,400 congregations, 65 synods and the churchwide organization, we live our faith together, guided by the Holy Spirit, Lutheran tradition and those called to serve with wisdom, care and conviction.

Conference of Bishops

Each synod elects a bishop who provides spiritual and organizational leadership within their region. These synod bishops and the presiding bishop and secretary form the Conference of Bishops, which plays an important advisory role across the wider church on numerous matters.

ELCA Church Council

The Church Council is the governing body of the ELCA between churchwide assemblies. It includes officers, bishops and elected members. Meeting twice a year, it sets policy, manages budgets and supports the church’s mission with faithfulness and accountability.

Rostered Ministers: Called to Serve

ELCA leaders serve in many roles. Rostered ministers serve on two rosters: pastors (ministers of Word and Sacrament) preach and administer sacraments; deacons (ministers of Word and Service) connect the church and the world through service. Both pastors and deacons complete candidacy and theological training.
