DENVER (ELCA) -- Voting members of the 1999 Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) chose a total of 93 people to serve on the ELCA Church Council and on 11 churchwide boards and committees. Those elected at this assembly will serve six-year terms.
The churchwide assembly, the chief legislative authority of the ELCA, met Aug. 16-22 here at the Colorado Convention Center. There were more than 2,500 people participating, including 1,038 ELCA voting members. The theme for the biennial assembly was "Making Christ Known: Hope for a New Century."
The Nominating Committee originally presented a slate of 196 nominees. Voting members added 34 nominations from the floor for positions on ELCA Church Council, the boards of the ELCA Division for Congregational Ministries, ELCA Division for Ministry, ELCA Division for Outreach, ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools, ELCA Division for Church in Society, ELCA Division for Global Mission, ELCA Publishing House, ELCA Board of Pensions, and the ELCA Nominating Committee, ELCA Committee on Discipline and ELCA Nominating Committee.
On the first ballot, 64 people were elected; on the second ballot, 29 people were elected in runoff elections. Here are the results:
