Regina Hassanally Reelected Bishop of the ELCA Southeastern Minnesota Synod

CHICAGO — The Rev. Regina Hassanally was reelected May 30 to serve a six-year term as bishop of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election took place during the synod assembly, May 30-31 at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn.

The bishop was reelected on the first ballot, with 274 votes, representing 91.9% of the legal ballots cast.

Hassanally was elected the synod’s bishop in 2019. Previously she served as pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Goodhue, Minn. (2012-2019), and as director of shared ministry at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, Minn. (2008-2012).

She received her Bachelor of Arts in biology health professions from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, in 2005, and her Master of Divinity degree from Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., in 2008. Her Lutheran year was spent at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., in 2011. Luther is one of seven ELCA seminaries.
