Church leaders today must be prepared to address questions concerning immigration policies and practices, and the Bible offers a wealth of resources for doing so. The New Testament maintains that followers of Jesus possess a “citizenship in heaven” that transcends other loyalties. Followers of Jesus embrace a theology of grace that prioritizes mercy and compassion over adherence to otherwise legitimate regulations, and Jesus insists that treatment of undocumented non-citizens is indicative of how he himself is regarded and treated by people who welcome (or don’t welcome) him when he comes to them in precisely that guise.
